Fungal biology

Fungal biology studies organisms called fungi, which are distinct from plants and animals. Fungi are made up of tiny, thread-like structures called hyphae that form a network called mycelium. They absorb nutrients by breaking down organic matter in their environment, playing key roles in decomposition and nutrient cycling. Fungi reproduce through spores, which can travel through air or water to grow into new organisms. They include yeasts, molds, and mushrooms. Fungi are vital for ecosystems, have uses in medicine and food production, and can sometimes cause infections in humans and other organisms.
