Ergotism

Ergotism is a condition caused by consuming grains, especially rye, contaminated with a fungus called Ergot. This fungus produces chemicals known as alkaloids, which can cause a range of symptoms. Historically, ergotism led to serious health issues such as hallucinations, convulsions, gangrene, and dizziness. Symptoms result from blood vessel constriction, reducing blood flow to extremities, and from nerve effects of the toxins. While rare today, ergotism was more common before modern grain cleaning and milling practices. Medical treatment involves removing the source of exposure and managing symptoms, with some ergot alkaloids still used in medicine under controlled circumstances.
