Detente

Détente refers to the period of relaxed tensions and improved relations between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War, particularly from the late 1960s to the late 1970s. It involved diplomatic agreements, like arms control treaties, and greater engagement in trade and cultural exchanges. The goal was to reduce the risk of nuclear conflict and promote stability. Although it led to some cooperation, underlying ideological differences remained, and tensions would later rise again. Détente is significant for its efforts to manage competition between superpowers through negotiation rather than confrontation.
