Ostpolitik

Ostpolitik was a German diplomatic strategy initiated in the late 1960s, particularly by West German Chancellor Willy Brandt. Its goal was to improve relations between West Germany and Eastern European countries, especially East Germany, amidst the Cold War tensions. By promoting dialogue, trade, and cultural exchanges, Ostpolitik aimed to reduce hostility, foster cooperation, and ultimately ease the division between East and West. This approach contributed to a gradual thaw in Cold War relations and set the groundwork for future reunification of Germany in 1990.
