defence mechanisms

Defense mechanisms are psychological strategies used by individuals to cope with anxiety and protect their self-esteem. They operate unconsciously, allowing people to deal with uncomfortable emotions and thoughts. Common examples include denial, where one refuses to accept reality; repression, where unwanted thoughts are pushed out of awareness; and projection, where one attributes their own feelings to others. These mechanisms are natural responses to stress, helping to maintain mental balance, but they can sometimes hinder personal growth if overused or relied upon excessively. Understanding them can lead to better emotional awareness and healthier coping strategies.
