Decembrists

The Decembrists were a group of Russian army officers who led a failed uprising on December 14, 1825, against the autocratic rule of Tsar Nicholas I. They sought political reforms, including constitutional government and the abolition of serfdom, inspired by Enlightenment ideas. The revolt took place in St. Petersburg, but it was quickly suppressed. Many Decembrists were imprisoned or exiled to Siberia, where they continued to advocate for change. Their actions marked an early expression of revolutionary thought in Russia and influenced future movements for reform and revolution in the country.
