Congenital CMV Infection
Congenital CMV infection occurs when a baby is infected with the cytomegalovirus (CMV) during pregnancy. CMV is a common virus, but if a mother contracts it for the first time while pregnant, it can pass to the baby and potentially lead to serious health issues. These may include hearing loss, vision problems, developmental delays, and other physical or neurological issues. Many babies with congenital CMV appear healthy at birth, but symptoms can emerge later. Early detection and intervention can help manage some of the complications associated with this condition.
