Configuration Item
A Configuration Item (CI) is any component or element in a system that is managed and tracked throughout its lifecycle. This could be hardware, software, documentation, or even processes. Each CI is identified and monitored to ensure proper functioning, maintenance, and changes over time. For instance, in a computer network, a server and its operating system would both be considered CIs. Keeping detailed records of CIs helps organizations maintain control, improve efficiency, and ensure everything works together smoothly, minimizing issues and downtime.
