Communicative Competence (Dell Hymes)

Communicative competence, a concept introduced by linguist Dell Hymes, refers to the ability to use language effectively in social contexts. It goes beyond knowing grammar and vocabulary; it encompasses understanding cultural norms, contexts, and the appropriateness of language in different situations. For example, knowing when to use formal language versus casual language, or understanding the subtleties of humor in conversation. Successful communication involves not just speaking and writing correctly, but also being socially aware and adapting language to fit the audience and situation.
