Chinese Cultural Revolution

The Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) was a socio-political movement initiated by Mao Zedong, the leader of communist China. Aimed at preserving communist ideology by purging remnants of capitalist and traditional elements from Chinese society, it led to widespread chaos, persecution of intellectuals, and the destruction of cultural heritage. Millions were mobilized, especially students who formed the Red Guards, to attack perceived enemies of the state. The revolution resulted in severe social, economic, and cultural upheaval, ultimately causing significant human suffering and disruption in China before it began to wind down after Mao's death in 1976.
