Shanghai Commune

Shanghai Commune was a radical experimental community initiative initiated during China's Great Leap Forward in 1967. Modeled after revolutionary ideals, it aimed to collectivize all aspects of daily life and work, merging families into shared communal living and responsibility, to promote equality and eliminate traditional hierarchies. The movement reflected Maoist principles, emphasizing collective effort over individualism. However, it faced challenges such as loss of privacy, social tensions, and practical difficulties, leading to its disbandment within a couple of years. The Shanghai Commune exemplifies China's efforts to reshape social organization during a turbulent political period.
