Chalmers' theory of modality
David Chalmers’ theory of modality explores the nature of possibility and necessity. He distinguishes between different types of possibilities: physical possibility (what could happen in the actual world governed by physical laws) and metaphysical possibility (what could happen in any conceivable world). Chalmers argues that understanding these possibilities helps clarify deeper philosophical questions, such as the nature of consciousness. He emphasizes that while something may be physically impossible, it could still be metaphysically possible, expanding our understanding of what exists beyond our current reality and the limits of the physical world.
