Canton System
The Canton System was a trade policy established by the Qing Dynasty in China during the 18th and 19th centuries. It restricted foreign merchants to the port of Canton (now Guangzhou) for trade, controlling the flow of goods and dealings. Foreign traders had to work through licensed Chinese merchants, limiting direct contact with Chinese officials and society. This system aimed to regulate trade and protect China from foreign influences. It eventually contributed to tensions with Western powers, leading to the Opium Wars and the eventual opening of more ports to foreign trade.
