Brain Reserve Theory suggests that individuals have varying levels of "cognitive reserves," built up over a lifetime through education, mental stimulation, and social engagement. This reserve helps protect the brain against damage, enabling people to maintain cognitive function longer, even in the presence of age-related conditions or diseases like Alzheimer's. Essentially, more cognitive reserve can delay the onset of dementia symptoms and help maintain overall mental health, allowing some to cope better with neurological challenges than others, based on their accumulated experiences and learning.
