Black Hills War

The Black Hills War (1876-1877) was a conflict between the United States government and Native American tribes, primarily the Lakota Sioux. Tensions arose over the Black Hills region, which was sacred to the Sioux and was promised to them in treaties. After gold was discovered there, the U.S. government sought to acquire the land. This led to armed resistance from the Sioux, resulting in significant battles, including the famous Battle of Little Bighorn, where General Custer’s forces were defeated. Ultimately, the war led to a loss of land and sovereignty for the Sioux and heightened conflict between Native Americans and settlers.
