bicarbonate buffering

Bicarbonate buffering is a system in our body that helps maintain the right balance of acidity and alkalinity (pH) in our blood. It works mainly through bicarbonate ions (HCO3-) and carbonic acid (H2CO3). When acids increase in the blood, bicarbonate can neutralize them, preventing harmful changes in pH. Conversely, if the blood becomes too alkaline, carbonic acid can release hydrogen ions to lower the pH. This buffering system is crucial for overall health, enabling our organs to function properly despite varying conditions.
