Battle of Blood River
The Battle of Blood River took place on December 16, 1838, between the Voortrekkers, Dutch-speaking settlers in South Africa, and the Zulu warriors. The Voortrekkers, led by Andries Pretorius, sought to establish their own independence from British rule. They were outnumbered but heavily armed. The Voortrekkers achieved a decisive victory, causing significant Zulu casualties. This battle is commemorated in Afrikaner history as a symbol of resistance and self-determination. The day is now marked as the Day of the Covenant, reflecting the Voortrekkers' belief that their success was a divine intervention in their struggle.
