Basilica Cistern

The Basilica Cistern is an ancient underground water reservoir located in Istanbul, Turkey, constructed around the 6th century during the reign of Emperor Justinian I. It served to supply water to the Great Palace of Constantinople and other buildings. The cistern features a vast, dimly lit space supported by 336 columns, many of which have intricate carvings. Notably, two columns are topped with Medusa heads, adding a touch of mystery. Today, the Basilica Cistern is a popular tourist attraction, showcasing Byzantine engineering and offering a glimpse into the city’s rich historical tapestry.
