Baltimore classification
The Baltimore classification is a system used to categorize viruses based on their genetic material and replication methods. It divides viruses into seven groups: DNA viruses, RNA viruses, and retroviruses, among others. Each group reflects how the virus stores its genetic information—either as DNA or RNA—and how it reproduces. This classification helps researchers understand viral behavior, discover treatments, and develop vaccines by providing a structured way to study different viruses systematically. It is named after the city of Baltimore, where this classification was developed.
