Alpha-gal Syndrome

Alpha-gal syndrome is an allergic reaction to a carbohydrate called galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose, or alpha-gal, found in red meat and certain animal products. It usually develops after a tick bite, particularly from the Lone Star tick, which transfers this carbohydrate to humans. People with this syndrome can experience reactions like hives, nausea, or severe anaphylaxis hours after eating meat. The condition highlights an unusual link between insect bites and food allergies, and management typically involves avoiding red meat and consulting with healthcare professionals for better understanding and care.
