Acute Myeloid Leukemia

Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) is a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow, where blood cells are produced. In AML, abnormal white blood cells called myeloblasts grow rapidly and don't mature properly, crowding out healthy blood cells. This can lead to symptoms like fatigue, infections, easy bruising, and anemia. AML progresses quickly and requires prompt treatment, often involving chemotherapy, to destroy the abnormal cells and restore normal blood cell production. While it primarily affects adults, it can occur at any age. The exact cause is often unknown, but certain genetic and environmental factors may increase risk.
