ACT (Artemisinin-based Combination Therapies)
Artemisinin-based Combination Therapies (ACT) are a treatment for malaria, a serious disease caused by parasites transmitted through mosquito bites. These therapies combine artemisinin, a compound derived from the sweet wormwood plant, with other anti-malarial medications. This combination increases effectiveness and helps prevent the parasites from becoming resistant to treatment. ACTs are recommended by the World Health Organization for treating uncomplicated malaria and have significantly reduced malaria-related deaths in many parts of the world. By attacking the malaria parasites in different ways, ACTs improve recovery rates and contribute to global malaria control efforts.
