19th-century Norway
In the 19th century, Norway underwent significant changes marked by its transition from a union with Denmark to a union with Sweden in 1814. This period saw rising nationalism and cultural revival, exemplified by the emergence of a unique Norwegian identity, literature, and art. Economy-wise, Norway shifted from agriculture-focused livelihoods to more industrial and maritime activities, leading to urbanization. The century also experienced social reforms, increased literacy, and political movements pushing for greater independence. By the end of the century, aspirations for a fully sovereign nation were growing, setting the stage for Norway’s eventual independence in 1905.
