1960 Turkish coup d'état
The 1960 Turkish coup d'état occurred on May 27 when the military intervened to depose the democratically elected Prime Minister Adnan Menderes. Tensions had risen due to political strife and Menderes's authoritarian tendencies, leading the military to view his government as a threat to democracy. The coup leaders established a National Unity Committee, suspended the constitution, and arrested many politicians, including Menderes. The coup was relatively bloodless, but it marked the first time in Turkey's history that military intervention occurred against a civilian government, setting a precedent for future coups and military influence in Turkish politics.
