Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome
Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome is a rare condition where tumors called gastrinomas grow, usually in the pancreas or the small intestine. These tumors produce excessive amounts of a hormone called gastrin, which stimulates the stomach to produce too much acid. This can lead to severe stomach ulcers, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal issues. The condition can be difficult to diagnose due to its rarity and the nonspecific nature of symptoms. Treatment often involves managing symptoms through medications that reduce stomach acid and, in some cases, surgery to remove the tumors.
