Yeniçeri Corps
The Yeniçeri Corps, or Janissaries, were elite infantry units in the Ottoman Empire, established in the late 14th century. They were originally formed from young Christian boys taken from their families through a system called devshirme, converted to Islam, and trained as soldiers. The Janissaries played a key role in the military and political power of the empire, known for their discipline and innovative tactics. Over time, they gained significant influence and were involved in palace politics. The corps was disbanded in the early 19th century as part of modernization efforts within the Ottoman military.
