Wernicke's encephalopathy
Wernicke's encephalopathy is a serious brain disorder caused by a deficiency of thiamine (vitamin B1), often linked to chronic alcoholism but also seen in severe malnutrition or certain medical conditions. It affects the brain areas that control memory, coordination, and eye movement, leading to symptoms like confusion, difficulty walking, and eye issues. If not treated promptly with thiamine supplements, it can lead to lasting neurological damage. Recognizing and addressing the condition early is crucial for recovery and to prevent complications, including a related syndrome known as Korsakoff syndrome.
