Korsakoff Syndrome

Korsakoff Syndrome is a neurological disorder often caused by chronic alcohol misuse or severe nutritional deficiencies, particularly a lack of thiamine (vitamin B1). It primarily affects memory, leading to gaps in recollection and difficulties in forming new memories. Individuals may confabulate, creating false memories to fill in these gaps. Symptoms can also include confusion and changes in behavior. The disorder often arises after a condition called Wernicke's Encephalopathy. Early diagnosis and treatment, typically involving thiamine supplementation and alcohol cessation, can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
