Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome
Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome is a brain disorder often caused by severe vitamin B1 (thiamine) deficiency, commonly associated with chronic alcoholism. It has two main stages: Wernicke's encephalopathy, which leads to confusion, problems with coordination, and vision issues; and Korsakoff syndrome, which causes memory loss and difficulty forming new memories. People with this syndrome may struggle with everyday tasks and may not realize their memory gaps. Treatment focuses on thiamine replacement and addressing the underlying causes, but early intervention is crucial for better recovery outcomes.
