Vancomycin resistance
Vancomycin resistance refers to the ability of some bacteria, particularly certain strains of Enterococcus and Staphylococcus aureus, to survive despite the presence of vancomycin, an important antibiotic. This resistance can occur through genetic changes in the bacteria that prevent the drug from working effectively. As a result, infections caused by these resistant bacteria are harder to treat, leading to longer hospital stays and increased healthcare costs. The emergence of vancomycin-resistant bacteria highlights the need for careful antibiotic use and ongoing research to develop new treatments.
