Utricularia (bladderwort)
Utricularia, commonly known as bladderwort, is a genus of carnivorous plants that thrive in aquatic environments or damp soils. What sets them apart is their unique trapping mechanism: they have small, bladder-like structures that capture tiny prey, such as insects and microscopic organisms. When a prey touches the trap’s trigger hairs, the bladder quickly sucks in water and the prey, effectively trapping it inside. This adaptation allows bladderworts to supplement their nutrient intake, particularly nitrogen, which is often scarce in their habitats. They are found worldwide, showcasing diverse species in various ecosystems.
