urobilinogen
Urobilinogen is a byproduct formed when the liver breaks down bilirubin, a substance produced from the breakdown of red blood cells. After bilirubin is processed in the intestines, some of it is transformed into urobilinogen. This compound can be reabsorbed into the bloodstream and eventually excreted in urine or turned into stercobilin and eliminated in feces, giving stool its brown color. Urobilinogen levels in urine can be tested to help diagnose liver function or conditions like hemolysis, where red blood cells break down unusually fast. Proper levels are essential for healthy bodily processes.
