jaundice

Jaundice is a condition where the skin and the whites of the eyes turn yellow due to an excess of a substance called bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is produced when the body breaks down old red blood cells. Normally, the liver processes bilirubin and helps eliminate it through the digestive system. If the liver is damaged, or if there's increased breakdown of red blood cells, bilirubin can build up, causing yellowing. Jaundice can indicate underlying health issues such as liver disease, blockage of bile flow, or hemolytic anemia, and should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
