Urban Land Ceiling Act

The Urban Land Ceiling Act, enacted in India in 1976, was designed to control urban landholding and prevent the concentration of land ownership. It aimed to promote equitable distribution by imposing limits on the amount of urban land one person could own. Any excess land had to be surrendered to the government for public purposes, such as housing or infrastructure development. The law sought to address issues of land scarcity in growing urban areas and improve access to land for lower-income residents, though it faced challenges in implementation and has since been largely repealed.
