U.S. Atomic Energy Commission

The U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) was established in 1946 to oversee the development and regulation of atomic energy, especially after World War II. Its primary roles included promoting peaceful uses of nuclear energy, ensuring safety and security, and managing nuclear weapons programs. The AEC played a key role in advancing nuclear technology while addressing concerns about safety and environmental impact. In 1974, it was replaced by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) as part of a reorganization aimed at better safety and energy policy management.
