transmissible spongiform encephalopathy
Transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) refers to a group of rare brain diseases caused by infectious proteins called prions. These diseases lead to the progressive degeneration of the brain, creating a sponge-like appearance due to damage. TSEs affect various species, including humans, and are often associated with symptoms like rapid cognitive decline, changes in behavior, and movement difficulties. Notable examples include mad cow disease in cattle and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans. TSEs are difficult to diagnose and currently have no cure, making prevention, such as proper handling of infected tissues, crucial.
