Torrijos Constitution

The Torrijos Constitution, adopted in 1972 in Panama, established a framework for democratic governance. Named after General Omar Torrijos, who led the country at the time, the constitution aimed to balance powers among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. It emphasized social justice, economic development, and the rights of citizens, although it was criticized for allowing military influence in politics. The constitution reflected Panama's efforts to assert its sovereignty, particularly in light of U.S. military presence in the country. It remained in effect until 1983, when political changes led to significant amendments.
