Tissue Typing
Tissue typing is a medical process used to determine the compatibility of tissues, such as for organ transplants or blood transfusions. It identifies specific markers, called HLA (human leukocyte antigen) types, on the surface of cells. These markers help the immune system recognize what belongs in the body and what doesn’t. By matching the donor's and recipient's HLA types, doctors aim to reduce the risk of rejection, where the recipient’s body attacks the new tissue, increasing the chances of a successful transplant or transfusion. It's a crucial step in ensuring safe medical procedures involving tissues.
