Thrombosis and Hemostasis

Hemostasis is the natural process your body uses to stop bleeding after an injury. When a blood vessel is damaged, platelets (blood cells) quickly gather at the injury site and form a temporary plug. Blood clotting factors then work together to strengthen this plug with a stable fibrin mesh, creating a clot that seals the wound. Thrombosis, on the other hand, occurs when a blood clot forms unnecessarily inside a blood vessel, which can block blood flow and lead to health problems like strokes or heart attacks. Both processes involve complex mechanisms to balance bleeding and clot prevention.
