The Thrombus Theory
The Thrombus Theory refers to the understanding of how blood clots, or thrombi, form within blood vessels. When damage occurs to the blood vessel lining, platelets (tiny blood cells) gather at the injury site and stick together to form a plug. This process is essential for stopping bleeding. However, sometimes thrombi can form inappropriately, leading to conditions like heart attacks or strokes. The theory highlights the balance between clot formation, which is necessary for healing, and the potential dangers of excessive clotting that can block blood flow and cause serious health issues.
