The Helsinki Accords

The Helsinki Accords, signed in 1975, were a major diplomatic agreement involving 35 countries, including the United States and Soviet Union. Aimed at improving relations between the Eastern and Western blocs during the Cold War, the accords addressed security, cooperation in economics and technology, and human rights. While not legally binding, they established principles that encouraged dialogue and set a foundation for future negotiations. The Accords also highlighted the importance of respecting borders and individual freedoms, influencing later movements for democracy and human rights in Eastern Europe.
