The Camp David Accords
The Camp David Accords, signed in 1978, were a series of negotiations between Egypt and Israel, facilitated by U.S. President Jimmy Carter at Camp David in Maryland. This historic agreement aimed to achieve peace between the two countries after decades of conflict, particularly following the Yom Kippur War in 1973. Egypt recognized Israel's right to exist, while Israel agreed to withdraw from the Sinai Peninsula, which it had occupied since 1967. The accords set a framework for peace and established diplomatic relations, significantly changing the political landscape in the Middle East.
