The Anaconda Plan

The Anaconda Plan was a strategy devised by Union General Winfield Scott during the American Civil War. Its goal was to defeat the Confederate states by blockading Southern ports and controlling the Mississippi River, effectively "squeezing" the South economically and geographically. By cutting off trade and supplies, the Union aimed to weaken the Confederate war effort over time, similar to how an anaconda snake constricts its prey. The plan emphasized a long-term, attritional approach rather than quick, decisive battles, ultimately leading to the Union's victory.
