The Abyei Area

The Abyei Area is a disputed region located along the border between Sudan and South Sudan. It is rich in oil and has significant cultural importance to both the Dinka and Misseriya ethnic groups. The area has been a source of conflict since the Sudanese Civil War, leading to tensions between the two countries. In 2011, when South Sudan became independent, the status of Abyei remained unresolved, resulting in ongoing disputes and violence. A UN peacekeeping mission has been deployed to help stabilize the region, but tensions persist over governance and resource control.
