Tauopathies

Tauopathies are a group of neurodegenerative disorders characterized by the abnormal accumulation of tau protein in the brain. These conditions, including Alzheimer's disease, frontotemporal dementia, and others, lead to the destruction of brain cells and cognitive decline. Tau proteins usually help stabilize the structure of neurons, but when they become tangled, it disrupts normal brain function. Symptoms vary depending on the specific tauopathy but often include memory loss, changes in behavior, and difficulties with movement. Research is ongoing to better understand these diseases and develop effective treatments.
