tımar system
The tımar system was a land grant system used in the Ottoman Empire, where the sultan awarded land to military officers and administrators in exchange for their service. These landholders, known as timar holders, collected taxes and maintained order in their designated areas. In return, they were expected to provide military support to the state when needed. This system helped the Ottomans manage their vast territories by decentralizing authority, ensuring local governance, and incentivizing loyalty among those who defended the empire. The tımar system played a crucial role in the administrative and military organization of the empire.
