Sports-related Sudden Cardiac Arrest
Sports-related sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) refers to an unexpected loss of heart function during physical activity, often affecting athletes. It can occur due to various underlying heart conditions, including structural abnormalities or arrhythmias. Symptoms may include fainting, chest pain, or unusual fatigue. Immediate intervention, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), is crucial for survival. Although rare, awareness and preparedness can significantly improve outcomes, highlighting the importance of screening and monitoring athletes for heart health before engaging in competitive sports.
