Soekarno was Indonesia’s first president, serving from 1945 to 1967. He was a key leader in Indonesia’s struggle for independence from Dutch colonial rule and played a major role in uniting the diverse archipelago into a single nation. A charismatic orator and nationalist, Soekarno promoted ideas of unity, anti-imperialism, and socialism.
