Shift Work Sleep Disorder
Shift Work Sleep Disorder (SWSD) is a condition affecting people who work non-traditional hours, such as night shifts or rotating shifts. It occurs when the body's internal clock, or circadian rhythm, is disrupted, leading to difficulties in sleeping and staying awake. Individuals with SWSD often experience insomnia, excessive sleepiness during waking hours, and impaired daytime functioning. These disruptions can increase the risk of mood disorders, cardiovascular issues, and decreased job performance. Effective management may include lifestyle changes, sleep hygiene techniques, and sometimes medication to help align sleep patterns with work schedules.
