Sharif Hussein

Sharif Hussein bin Ali (1853-1931) was an influential Arab leader and the Sharif of Mecca. He is best known for his role in the Arab Revolt against Ottoman rule during World War I, which sought to establish greater Arab independence. Hussein's aspirations were supported by the British, who promised Arab autonomy in exchange for military help against the Ottomans. After the war, however, the post-war agreements did not fulfill his ambitions, leading to his eventual exile. Hussein’s legacy is significant in Arab nationalism and the shaping of the modern Middle East.
